WAIPARA
Riesling
The region's bright days, cool nights and long, dry Autumns create the perfect climate for Riesling, which ranges from bone dry to lushly sweet. This cool climate valley produces wines with notes of lemons, limes, green apples and citrus.
Sauvignon Blanc
Delightful, dry and zesty with good acidity and vibrant fruit character.
Chardonnay
Think elegance and finesse, with good levels of natural acidity and intense minerality.
Pinot Gris
The cooler areas in the South Island produce wines with greater acidity and headier aromas. Think apples, pears, honeysuckle, bread and spice.
Pinot Noir
With soils loaded with limestone and sun drenched slopes reminiscent of Burgundy look for rich, ripe, dark plum and chocolate, and big round tannins. You may find herbal notes along with berryfruit characters and hints of pepper and spice.
MARLBOROUGH
Sauvignon Blanc
The benchmark for this pungently aromatic, explosively flavoured style. It assails the senses with green capsicum (bell-pepper) and gooseberry characters through to lush passionfruit and tropical fruit overtones. Think zesty, pungent gooseberry, passionfruit and herbal aromas and flavours.
Chardonnay
Typically medium-bodied, zesty styles: look for white peach and grapefruit flavours with good acidity. Try wines with and without oak.
Pinot Gris
Rich and mouthfilling styles with ripe stonefruit characters.
Pinot Noir
Styles are complex, with tight structure and bright cherry, raspberry and plum flavours.
